Moving into the Unknown

By Joel Tarbutton: New life church, letchworth 22/09/2020

Moving Into The Unknown "I’ve got something to tell you.” Sarah put her book down and looked up at her husband. “You need to pack your bags.” Abraham said. Finally, he’s gotten the hint and is taking me on that holiday he keeps promising me Sarah thought. “Oh yeah,” she smiled. “How many nights shall I pack for?” “You need to pack it all. We’re moving.” “What? What do you mean...moving?” “I mean, we need to move, to a new place.” Abraham replied. “Wait a minute. Where are we going?” “I dunno.”“What!?” “I dunno.” Abraham said again. “I heard you the first time. I meant, ‘What do you mean, you don’t know where we are going?’ ” “That’s what I mean, I dunno where we are going.” “But, I’m comfortable here. We’ve got a good thing going. I’ve got friends here. I am used to the way we’ve done things. Everybody is happy here.”“I know, but we gotta move.”Why?, God’s told me he’s taking us somewhere new.”  Great. Throw in the ‘God’ card.

You always do that Sarah thought to herself. Guess we gotta move. Hebrews 11.8 It was by faith that Abraham obeyed when God called him to leave home and go to another land that God would give him...He went even though he had no idea where he was going. It would have been pretty drastic to pack up everything. Gathering your things and getting ready to move into a new place, when it wasn’t expected or planned, would be a big step for anyone to undertake.

Going through your stuff as you prepare to move allows you an opportunity to see what things you want to take with you. It also gives you an opportunity to see what stuff you no longer need to take with you. (Like that lamp you got on your wedding day from a distant relative that has remained in the loft since the day you got it.) In all seriousness, we’ve all been asked to move. We are all in this together. The whole household is moving. We all have to adjust. We are all going to a new place and we don’t really know where we are going and we are not sure what it’s going to look like when we get there. All we know is, We Have To Moveand God Is With Us.

Being a people who move into the unknown is in our blood. It’s what we do as followers of Jesus. Jesus always called his followers into new places and He is still calling his people into new places. We Have To Move.

Moving Into The Unknown We are making some adjustments to the way we do church; the way we gather; the way we care for one another and the way we reach out to others. We Have To Move.Status Quo, has to go. We can’t do things the way they were before. We are moving on.

This season is an opportunity to think about leaving some stuff behind, because it won’t have a place in our new house. But, we don’t know where we are going. That’s okay. God Is With Us. But,we don’t know what it is going to look like. That’s okay. God Is With Us. But, we don’t really know what to do. That’s okay. God Is With Us. In this season of uncertainty, our certainty is God Is With Us. He will not abandon us or leave us as orphans. He will not forsake us. He goes ahead of us to prepare a place. God Is With Us. Wherever you are at with your moving plans, know that you are not alone.

You don’t have to have all the answers. You don’t have to have it all figured out. Please don’t ignore that stirring in your heart that says, Time To Move and when you feel afraid, take a deep breath as you step out into the unknown and know that God Is With You.
